The Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG) is a centralized national-level entrance examination conducted by NTA for admission to undergraduate programs at Central Universities, State Universities, Deemed Universities, and private institutions across India. Introduced in 2022, CUET has rapidly become one of India's largest entrance exams with over 15 lakh candidates appearing annually.
CUET replaced the Class 12 board marks-based merit system for central university admissions. No longer can a student with 95% in Class 12 directly get into Delhi University — they must now compete through CUET. This levels the playing field between different state boards and CBSE, removing the board-score inflation disadvantage.
As of 2025, over 260 universities participate in CUET including all 45 Central Universities (for which it is mandatory under UGC directives), many state universities, deemed universities, and select private institutions. The exam is conducted in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode across hundreds of centers in India and select overseas locations.
Before CUET, Delhi University admissions were based purely on Class 12 marks. This created massive inflation — students needed 99–100% in some boards for top DU colleges. CBSE students were disadvantaged compared to boards known for easy grading. CUET eliminated this inequity by creating a common performance benchmark.
| Target College | Score Target | Prep Time Needed | Strategy |
|---|---|---|---|
| SRCC / Hindu / LSR (Gen) | 780–800 | 6–8 months intensive | NCERT mastery + mock series |
| St. Stephen's / Miranda House | 750–780 | 5–6 months | NCERT + 3 years PYQ practice |
| Top DU Colleges (mid-tier) | 700–750 | 4–5 months | NCERT + CUET mock tests |
| Good DU / BHU / JNU | 650–700 | 3–4 months | NCERT + concept revision |
| Most Central Universities | 580–650 | 2–3 months | NCERT basics + General Test |
| Private Universities (top) | 500–580 | 1–2 months | NCERT essentials only |
Unlike JEE (JOSAA) or NEET (MCC), CUET does not have a centralized counselling system. Each participating university conducts its own admissions independently using CUET scores. This means you must apply and track admissions for each university separately.
All Central Universities follow the Central Government reservation policy for seat allocation. Category relaxation in CUET applies to both the qualifying cutoff and the admission cutoff.
